I know I drive that fast because unlike the busy highways of New York City where I barely exceed 40MPH with bumper to bumper traffic, in contrast to Pennsylvania highways that consist of slow 18-wheelers, and drivers zipping past them at fast speeds. When there is no cars on the road when I am leaving state college for New York I usually am driving about 90MPH when the speed limit is 65MPH. There speeds are greatly influenced by the number of cars on the road. Most people when driving on the highway ignore the speed limits and drive 10-15MPH over, and some even more.
When I am taking this long four and a half trip to New York, all that’s on my mind is pedal to the metal. One naturalistic observation I myself have been a part of is when I am driving to and from Penn state during school breaks. The cons are that you cannot control anything in the experiment without contradicting the definition of this research method. The pros of naturalistic observations are that it provides descriptive data about behavior without any outside influences. With all research methods, there are pros and cons. Another example more common is the show “What would you Do?” on ABC’s Primetime. Also to reiterate, the researcher did not create this environment, he simply chooses to observe at this location.
You are not manipulating the temperature, amount of light, noises etc. The bird is in it’s natural environment, and you are simply watching and observing behavior nothing more. Also in naturalistic observations, the researcher is manipulating nothing nor is he the one who created this environment. Naturalistic observation is a research method where the subjects are being observed in their natural habitats without the subject knowing they are being watched.
